i want to like this game, but its controls are absolute garbage, and the hitboxes seem to be off. the level design\/astetics and music are great. you will begin to resent the music as it stops and starts from the begining each time you die, and because of the control that will be frequently.

the video makes it look easy, and fluid, however its anything but. i got this on sale for super cheap so i cant complain too much. if the controls were tighter and more responsive this would be a fantastic indy gem, and im sad they missed the boat.

i gave it a shot even tho the reviews said otherwise. if i had the paitience i may eventually be able to beat this, but at this point it feels like a chore. i cant reccomend this unless you have limitless paitence or a supernatural ability to compensate for trash controls.. This game is awesome...
BUT.. WAIT... WHAT!!??. You're either going to love this game, or hate it. With it's proper synth sound track you'll be wanting to jump and dart you away around the forward facing track in time with the beat, and once you manage it, it does feel really great.

Doing that however isn't quite as simple as you'd think. While it's learning curve is non-existant, you're going to have to up your skill level to gain any traction in this game. A good memory of the level layouts is going to help you refine your gameplay. The game nudges you to go faster, that's not always the best route, slow and steady wins the race and ups your ability to master the levels. It's a all or nothing system, no retries, no rewinds. One hit, you're dead. Start from the beginning of the level. This itself is retro gaming, the 80's styled graphics and sound track just add to it.

Some of the later levels are really hash, and can be come frustratingly tricky to complete, even more so than the somewhat obnoxious tutorial from the get go. Stick with it, take yourtime to learn to finesse the controls, and you'll enjoy rolling.

If you can get it on sale, grab it. It might not be one of those games you always come back to, and it's certainly not one you or a friend can pick up and play without some commitment to it, it'll leave you with a retro syth overload of games gone by, even if they didn't look as good as this one.

A very nice kick of pseudo nostalgia, for a decent price.. First of all, I really do enjoy the retro music and design aesthetic. The game is also very charming, and the voice overlays are a nice touch. What is frustrating are the controls - the sphere that you're moving around is hard to control; the visuals also make it difficult to see where you are going at times; it was clearly made by a russian developer, so the translation is poor, and I don't really get the point of it.

I'm going to try it again, and quite possibly, change my review from there.. Not sure why half the reviews say that it's a thumbs down kind of game. But if you have ever played "No Thing" you might like the visually pleasing adventure that Retro Sphere is.

Visuals - Spot on. Synthwavey as hell and it looks beautiful. Not too dark. Not too light

Story - Now this is where things get interesting - You get weird messages throughout, sure they have russian subtitles, but these messages start to tell a small story hidden among the game.

Tutorial ? - Maybe the hardest part. Aha. Just take it slow. Get used to the game.

Speed - Sure, it says in the game itself to speed through the levels, but you don't have to. Nothing is stopping you from taking it slow, and taking it all in for a ride. With controller support (aside restarting and clicking next level) you can easily roll your way through levels taking in the visuals and the music.

Music - Holyshit its beautiful. The synthwave is a perfect replication of a retro style game which it aims for. Shame theres no OST DLC.

My only complaint would be that theres no easy restart or next level button on controller, and occasionally the game can lock up. It can also be very loud on startup with no real options menu.

Definitely give this game a shot :)
